Atlanta - S1, E1
The long periods of anticipation have finally come to an end! Donald Glover's new FX show Atlanta premiered tonight, and it's blacker than ever.
We're introduced to Donald's character Earn, who appears to be Paperboy's manager; Alfred, aka Paperboy (Brian Tyree Henry), Earn's rapping cousin; and Paperboy's blowed friend, Darius (Keith Stanfield) in a flash-foward scene where Paperboy is having an altercation with a disheveled fan in a parking lot. Guns are drawn – it's Atlanta... Probably somewhere near the Bluff – and someone gets shot. Who? We don't find out until the end of the episode.
In the present, we're also introduced to Earn's baby's mom, Van (Zazie Beetz). They have a weird relationship. They wake up in the bed together. Earn initiates sex, but is turned down once he neglects to tell her that he loves her. Lotty, Earn's young daughter lives with her mother full-time, and apparently so does Earn now that he's been kicked out of his parent's house. Did I mention that the baby momma is dating other people? Yeah... She's fed up with Earn's bullshit, and I can't wait to find out why.
Have you ever seen Snow on the Bluff? It's clear the story takes place in a low income part of Atlanta. I'm almost positive it's the Bluff.
Alfred hasn't seen Earn since his mother's funeral and finds it annoying that Earn is showing up now. Alfred accuses him of coming out of the woodwork for a handout – something that's all too familiar with him.
A white radio host, Dave (Griffin Freeman) knows of Earn from an earlier life, and does Earn a favor by playing his cousin's, Paperboy's, record on the radio. He also says "nigga." The white boy.
Earn has a weird experience with a dude on the bus.
Paperboy hears his record on the radio, and calls Earn so they can finally talk business. The disheveled fan (mentioned previously) deliberately kicks Alfred's side view mirror off. Alfred confronts him – which brings us back to the beginning scene.
Earn's baby's mom comes home from her date and catches a glimpse of the news. They're reporting a shooting, and Alfred and Earn's faces are splashed on the TV for the entire community to see. We find out who was shot, seeing as the wounded suspect is "still at large."
