Queen Sugar - S1, E1
Ohhhh lalaaaa! Queen Sugar is off to a steamy start as Nova (Rutina Wesley) is having sex with a white man, who we later find out is a cop of some sort. Nova is also quite the hippie activist / holistic junky / weed(wo)man, helping her community to be the best, and most relaxed, they can be.
We're introduced to Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) in a neighborhood park, just before he holds up a local corner store for a few dollars – which he later gives to his Aunt Violet (Tina Lifford) for helping him to care for his son, Blue. Did I mention that Blue (5 years old) plays with barbie dolls? I'm interested to see how this story line plays out, but it's clear that Ralph Angel will do anything for his little boy.
On the opposite end, Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) has quite the privileged life. Her husband is a pro athlete, she has a gorgeous mansion, equipped with a housekeeper, swimming pool and multiple luxury cars, and her teenaged son, Micah (Nicholas L. Ashe), is the cutest. She ironically criticizes her husband for making their son's life a little too cushy. I say "ironic," because I'm pretty sure her husband is the bread winner. No judgement, just facts. And this proved even more to be true as Charley meets up with her girlfriends to discuss a possible reality television show to document their "perfect" lives. Which takes an unexpected turn once they all receive notifications that their husbands, and the entire starting lineup, are caught on camera acting scandalously. Everyone except for Charley's husband, as of now.
Mr. Ernest (Charley, Ralph Angel and Nova's dad) overhears his colleagues (at his secret job) talking about the recent athlete scandal, and immediately reaches out to Charley to make sure she's OK. Mr. Ernest appears to be such a gentle and loving father, but my heart breaks just thinking about how he's going to pass away. No spoiler. You knew it was coming.
Oh, the farm! Yes! The whole premise of the show. So, Mr. Ernest owns a farm and is apparently in need of "a little time" with his family. Charley promises to come visit once things slow down in her life. Mr. Ernest picks Blue up from school, letting us know that Ralph Angel and Blue live close him. Blue's mother, you ask? Doesn't seem to be in their lives anymore. In fact, Ralph Angel scolds Blue when he asks if she will come to his birthday party. Ralph Angel tries to give Ernest a couple of dollars to help out around the farm, but Ernest declines, being skeptical of where his ex-con son got the payday.
Blue's birthday party is a success, and Ralph Angel is introduced to his son's teacher, Reyna Velez (Marycarmen Lopez). Yeah, they're definitely going to get together. Mr Ernest has a stroke on his porch during the party, and is found by one of Blue's classmates. Just... Wow.
Charley is definitely beloved in the media as the star spouse and poster child for what a good basketball wife should look like. At the game, fans chant "Davis the rapist" and boo just as Charley's son shows her video of her husband, his father, being an active participant in the team's scandalous gang rape video. I. Told. You. But wait! Charley dramatically walks on the court in the middle of the game and slaps the dog shit out her man! YASSSSSSSSSSS!
The never aging Bianca Lawson is introduced as Darla, Blue's absent, yet rehabilitated mother. In the midst of tragedy, Blue's teacher steps in to help Ralph Angel with Blue as he deals with his father's hospitalization.
The farm is struggling.
The family is in disarray.
Charley gets to the hospital just as her father passes away.
Nova's white lover is a married man with a family.
And I think Hollywood (Omar J. Dorsey), the family friend, and Aunt Violet get their swirl on.
Scan-da-lous. I can't wait for tomorrow's episode. Thank God for 2-day premiere events.
