Queen Sugar - S1, E2
Nova and her white (married, with a kid) boyfriend bicker slightly about his invite to her father's funeral. At this point, I'm sure that their relationship is an epic secret kept by solely them two.
Charley goes on her bougie, morning run around the farm, before having an unexpected run in with an interested buyer, Samuel Landry (David Jensen), in her father's land.
Ohhhh, and Nova is a writer – a pleasant surprise. She's getting pressure from her editor to write her next story about her family's "business." She's feisty, and shuts him down with the greatest curve I've heard all year...
"Stop wasting my gas money."
Ralph Angel debates with Aunt Violet about Blue attending Ernest's funeral. Micah can't seem to stop watching videos of his father's rape allegation / infidelity.
Micah and Charley's mother-son dynamic is interesting to me. He seems to be terrified of her. Like, one false move and she'll tell him to "go grab a switch." No, but seriously.
The family seems to have planned everything for Ernest's funeral without involving Charley.
Ralph Angel's fine, yet corrupted-behind officially asked Ms. Velez out on a date... I think.
Charley meets with Remy Newell (Dondre Whitfield. Also known as Joan Clayton's sex addicted ex-boyfriend from the early 2000's) to talk about her father. She starts to tell him about her encounter with Sam Landry, and he shuts her down because they were in a public place. Which leads me to believe that Sam is a dangerous trouble-maker / thug / community bully, if you will.
There's tension amongst the siblings as they finalize the details for their father's funeral. Charley offers to pay for the burial, but Nova insists on splitting the bill 3 ways - between Charley's card, and her 2 credit cards - hahahahahaha!
Nova is slowly becoming my favorite character, but I just can't get with the infidelity stuff.
They settle on a white casket to send Ernest "back to light," and Nova sews a pouch to the lining satin inside. What this pouch is, exactly? The preacher thinks it's some form of hippie-dippy witch craft, but I'm sure we'll find out soon.
Micah and Blue's game of checkers gets interrupted by a phone call from Charley's cheating ass husband, Davis. Micah breaks the news to him that Ernest has passed, giving his cheating ass their location and a reason to come make this tough family moment all about him. *rolls eyes*
Nova and Charley bond over buying fresh fish and crab for the repass. Charley is clearly removed from her country upbringing. Ralph Angel calls Darla to see if she can babysit their son during his father's funeral Saturday. She accepts, but is obviously not going to show up.
Nova and Hollywood are blindsided by the "peckerwoods" setting up "fancy ass tables and linens" in the front yard. It's all Charley's doing, and Nova let's her bougie ass have it.
"And, we certainly don't pay our respects with American Express."
Go head, Nova with the one linerssssssssss!
It's sad because Charley was only trying to help, but Nova doesn't think it's genuine. I definitely sense some resentment – not sure whose side it lives on full time, but it's definitely there.
Aunt Violet and Hollywood are definitely sleeping together. She encourages him to leave her since she can't give him what he wants – kids. He reassures her that he is exactly where he wants to be.
Davis' cheating ass creeps up on Micah as he plays basketball at the neighborhood community center. He swears up and down that he had nothing to do with the rape, and will "prove that he's innocent in time." Whatever. Charley IS NOT here for it, and doesn't hesitate to put him in his place, escorting their son out the door in the process.
Davis' cheating ass, "I'm not leaving my boy behind, OK. Micah needs me."
Micah, without skipping a beat, "I don't need you."
Davis' cheating ass attempts to give Micah his first championship ring, as some sort of "self-less" jester...
Davis' cheating ass to Micah, "It means NOTHING without you."
And Charley coming thru in the clutch, "Everything is NOT about you."
Blue sweetly tells his dad that he needs a haircut to impress his mother. As suspected, Darla's boss won't let her leave work early in order to babysit Blue during the funeral. Aunt Violet and Ralph Angel argue about Darla bringing her formerly, cracked-out behind around Blue. Blue waits for Darla to come pick him up, but she doesn't show. Ralph Angel is forced to bring Blue to the funeral, and is reminded, yet again, why Darla can't be depended upon.
Oh, and the doll. Yeah, it's his favorite toy. Ralph Angel is surprisingly OK with it.
Davis' cheating ass makes his unwanted appearance at the funeral. He reminds Charley that he's not there for "them," as in, "their relationship," and only for Ernest.
Remy Newell speaks at the funeral - Charley's definitely going to have a rendezvous with him. I'm sure of it.
Nova's white (married with a kid) boyfriend is in attendance, and so is Blue.
Darla's rehabilitated behind shows up.
Ernest is finally laid to rest.
Next week's episode is gonna be lit.
